SEO Bradford Where to start

How competitive is my local market in Bradford?

As competitive as the weakest business on page one, and you can measure that yourself in half an hour. Keyword tools sell a difficulty score, and for local searches we have found it close to useless, because it is modelled on national numbers. What tells you the truth is the results page itself: who is on it, whether they built a page for the search, and how much is behind the one at the bottom. Here is how to read it.

Who actually owns page one for your search?

Search the phrase as a customer would, from a phone, and sort what comes back into four piles: adverts, the map pack, directories such as Yell, Checkatrade and Bark, and real local businesses. A page dominated by directories and national brands is easier than it looks, because Google is showing them for want of anything better. A page where eight of the ten are Bradford firms with proper websites is a market people have already invested in.

Do the same for the three or four phrasings of the search, because the mix changes. Electrician Bradford and EV charger installation Bradford may have almost nobody in common.

Did the businesses above you build a page for this search?

Click each result and look at what Google chose to rank: a page written for that exact service and place, or a homepage that happens to mention it. This is the single most useful thing you can learn. When rivals rank with a general page, a purpose-built one usually beats them. Dolphin Heating in Huddersfield is number one on Google for female gas engineer Huddersfield, and named in the AI answer, because the site was built around the thing people actually type. When every rival already has a dedicated page with jobs on it, you are competing on evidence, and it will take longer.

How strong is the weakest site on page one?

Find the lowest-ranked local business on the page and look it over: how many pages, how many reviews on its Google profile, how old the domain is, whether anyone else on the web mentions it. That business is the floor. If the floor is a five-page site with a dozen reviews, a well-built site with real evidence can clear it within months. If the floor is a firm with two hundred reviews and a decade of history, budget for a longer campaign or a narrower search.

This one check is worth more than any difficulty score, because it measures what you actually have to beat.

Is the map pack the real competition?

For trades and services with a Bradford postcode, the map pack often takes the clicks before the ordinary results get a look in. Count the reviews on the three profiles shown, note their categories, and check whether their addresses are in the part of the district you serve. Map results shift with the searcher’s location, so a business in Bingley may see a different three from one in Wibsey. That is competition you measure profile by profile, and reviews are usually the deciding factor.

Which searches are worth fighting for at all?

A competitive search is only worth the fight if the work behind it is worth having. Before you commit a year to a broad term, list the last twenty jobs and what each was worth. Often the money sits in a specific search with far less competition. RB Electrical in Halifax has a page for each specific service, EV charging among them, with enough on it to rank on its own, and the business has averaged around two organic leads a week for five years on the back of that structure.

How does Halizona size up a market?

The same way, with the numbers written down: page one for every phrasing that matters, who built a page and who did not, the floor for each, the map pack and what the work is worth. It comes back as a short list of the searches we would go after first and an honest note on the ones we would leave alone. If the market is too strong for the budget, we would tell you so, because a year of paying to sit on page two helps nobody.

Bond Brickwork

Business
A Brighouse contractor supplying brickwork and masonry packages to national housebuilders on large residential developments across Yorkshire.
Problem
Developers and main contractors want to see scale, capability and finished sites before they shortlist a brickwork subcontractor, and the old website showed them almost none of it.
Work
We designed and built the website and have managed it, the search work and the marketing channels around it since 2018, adding evidence from live sites as each development finishes.

Top of Google for the commercial brickwork searches that bring work in, and recommended by AI search when people ask the same question there.

Problem
A strong family name on the site hoardings, and very little of the work visible to anyone searching for the company or scrolling past it on LinkedIn.

About Halizona

The Halifax marketing company behind this guide

Halizona is a marketing company based in Halifax, West Yorkshire. This site is our plain-English guide to search for businesses in Bradford, a short drive from our office, and it exists because search is the part of marketing that owners are most often asked to pay for and least often have explained to them.

We have been working with websites and digital marketing for nearly 20 years. Today that means SEO, AI search, websites, content, social media, photography, video and marketing strategy for established businesses across West Yorkshire and nearby areas, including Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford, Leeds, Keighley and Skipton.

Search is usually where the work starts, because a business nobody can find never gets the chance to be trusted or chosen. We do it in the open. You will always know what we are doing, why we are doing it and what it is achieving.

Find you.Trust you.Choose you.

Help the right people find you. Give them genuine reasons to trust you. Make it easy for them to choose you.

Common questions

Questions people ask about this

Is a keyword difficulty score any use for a local search?

As a rough ranking of one phrase against another, a little. As a measure of what it takes to reach page one in Bradford, no. The scores are modelled from national data and miss the local picture entirely. Read the results page instead.

What if a national company is on page one for my Bradford search?

Look at which page of theirs is ranking. It is usually a thin location page generated for every town in the country, and a genuine Bradford business with real jobs on the page often beats it.
